Underfoot conditions were testing in Tullamore at the Leinster Cross Country Championships.
Kildare Cross Country – Senior – 1st November 2009
It was the turn of the Seniors today as the Kildare Senior Cross Country took place in the Curragh and St Cocas were defending their title. David Campbell, after his impressive win last year is in warmer climes for the winter would not be defending his title but a strong St Cocas team took to the start line. Joseph Robinson made a return to cross country after his recent exploits in the Chicago Marathon – Gerry Robinson, Larry Kelly, Tom Groome, Mark Durkan and Tom Durkan making up the team. Gerry caused a little concern when he looked for a spare pair of shorts before the start….. Naas AC Mick Coyle and Newbridge AC Pat Malone took off like men possessed with Joseph in hot pursuit. Not far behind the team were packing well with Tom Groome, Gerry and Larry working well together along with another Newbridge athlete. At this stage Mark was about 10th and running well, Tom was moving nicely saying that it was his first training session for Prague 2010! All the lads were running well at this stage, even Gerry seemed to be getting on ok with the shorts….though he was surprisingly stuck for words when questioned…..not like him to be short of an answer!! Conditions were tough and positions did not change much during the gruelling 10K race with the top two going into the last lap together Mick pulling away from Pat with about 400m to go. Joseph finished 3rd with Larry finishing strongly in 4th and Gerry and Tom 6th and 7th taking the team title. Mark in about 13th and Tom both finished strongly – a fantastic team result – well done to you all. (Thankfully all was well on the shorts front and Gerry kept his dignity!!!!) Leinster Cross Country – Even Ages – Sunday 25th October A large contingent from the club travelled to Adamstown in Co Wexford last Sunday to compete in the first round of the Leinster cross country. Kildare Senior Cross Country takes place next Sunday on the Curragh at 2pm where St Cocas will be attempting to defend their title.
